New certification program targets tribal governance skills

A new certification program aims to strengthen tribal governance skills tailored for Native nations. 

The Tribal Leadership Council and KOSO Strategies will launch a three-day Tribal Governance Professional Certification program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, from Dec. 9–11. The program covers resource sharing, collaboration methods and sovereignty practices.  Participants must complete continuing education to maintain certification. 

The Tribal Leadership Council, a Las Vegas-based nonprofit formed in 2023, provides governance training to tribal executives. KOSO Strategies, based in El Dorado Hills, Calif., specializes in tribal government consulting. 

Governance training has become a priority for  tribal institutions. A 2021 Native Governance Center report found tribes face “significant difficulties” applying Western governing techniques to their tribes.
