Tribes and tribally designated housing entities in four states can compete for up to $500,000 each under a $4 million grant program aimed at supporting housing construction, rehabilitation and community development projects in Native communities.

The funding is available through the 2026 Native American Housing Initiatives Grants Program administered by Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka. Eligible applicants in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma must apply in partnership with a member financial institution of the Federal Home Loan Bank system.

Federal Home Loan Banks are congressionally chartered cooperatives that provide funding and liquidity to member banks, credit unions and other financial institutions. In recent years, several regional FHLBanks have expanded Native-focused housing and community development programs that use member institutions as a conduit for grants and other funding opportunities.

The application window runs through July 10. Eligible uses include down payment assistance, home repairs, new construction, IT upgrades and a number of other capacity building programs for tribal housing providers.

Last year’s NAHI cycle awarded $5 million after FHLBank Topeka increased funding in response to demand during the grant program’s first two years. Funded projects included tiny homes for tribal veterans, rehabilitation of existing homes, 3D-printed housing, subdivision development and rental housing. Other projects supported storm shelters, septic and well improvements, elder home repairs and community facility rehabilitation.

FHLBank Topeka launched the NAHI program in 2023 with and has increased funding and the number of awardees each year. The bank said 16 projects received awards in 2025, up from 12 in 2024 and eight in 2023.
